New chemical iris for tiny phone cameras

A new type of chemical iris designed for smartphone cameras has been created by researchers in Germany.
Traditional cameras use mechanical blades to change the size of the aperture through which light enters.
The new micro-iris features transparent chemical rings which turn opaque when a small voltage is applied.
The ultrathin device could inspire a new generation of tiny cameras for phones and tablets according to a study in the Journal of Optics.
As in the human eye, the iris in a camera controls the amount of light that reaches a sensor, affecting the overall focus of the image.
Typical mechanical irises feature overlapping blades which open and close around a central aperture.
But attempts to miniaturise these have reached a physical limit, according to researchers at the University of Kaiserslautern.
Battery powered
Instead, they propose an alternative, chemical design - just 55 micrometres thick.
It features concentric rings which can be darkened and lightened to adjust the size of the aperture and thus, the depth of focus.
The device consists of two glass substrates sandwiched together, each one carrying a thin film of the electrochromic polymer PEDOT (poly 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) on an underlying transparent electrode.
The chemical can be switched into an opaque state with a low voltage (1.5V) and does not require a continuous current to maintain its state - making it highly suitable for battery-powered devices.
"Our results prove that the electrochromic [EC] iris can be utilised in principle to control the transmitted light and the depth of focus," said lead author Tobias Deutschmann.
"The potential of the iris in its current state is mostly restricted by the insufficient absorption contrast and relatively long switching time of the commercially available PEDOT material.
"However, the synthesis of optimised EC materials is under rapid development.
"We will now further investigate the potential of optimised electrochromic materials, with a particular focus on improving the optical contrast and, in particular, the control of the depth of focus - this is the decisive hardware parameter which determines the success of next-generation models in the smartphone business."

Bacteria 'bricklayer' protein set for attack

LptDE protein 
Scientists have found a new route to attack antibiotic-resistant bacteria by blocking the mechanism they use to build their exterior coating.
The bugs construct this defensive barrier in a complex process that depends on a key dual-protein molecule.
Its structure has been mapped using the intense X-rays of the Diamond Light Source in Oxfordshire.
Researchers tell the journal Nature that drugs can now be developed to interfere with this LptDE protein.
"We identified how LptDE builds up the outer membrane," explained Prof Changjiang Dong, from the University of East Anglia's Norwich Medical School.
"It does this through a 'path' and a 'gate', and we have shown that if we block the path or the gate, the bacteria will die. To do this, you would design and use another, much smaller molecule," he told BBC News.
The experiments targeted gram-negative bacteria, which cause a large number of infections, ranging from salmonella to meningitis.
This class of bugs is getting increasingly smart at warding off attack from antibiotic treatments thanks in part to the impermeability of its lipid-based outer coating.
The protein complex LptDE is the "bricklayer" that pulls up the lipopolysaccharide "bricks" from inside the bacterium to insert them in the cell wall.

Crystalline forms of the complex were sent to the Diamond synchrotron, which uses especially brilliant X-rays to illuminate structures at the atomic scale.
The team used this information to then model LptDE's behaviour and determine its weaknesses.
What makes LptDE such a fascinating target for new drugs is that it is highly "conserved" - its role is common across gram-negative bacteria.

What is more, by attacking the functioning of the outer membrane new drugs would not need to get inside the bugs before starting their work.
And, in any case, resistant bugs seem to have evolved a mechanism to simply pump antibiotics back out when they do get through.
"If the bacteria do not have the outer membrane, they cannot withstand environmental changes. It also makes it easier for the human immune system to kill them," said Prof Dong.
Prof Mark Fielder, from the Society for Applied Microbiology, commented: "The work reported is at a very early stage but does offer some potentially useful information in the fight against bacterial resistance.
"What is needed now is the development of a usable inhibitor that can be tested against gram-negative clinical strains of bacteria to see if there is a longer term value to the research," he told the Science Media Centre.
And Prof Brendan Wren, from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, added: "New antibiotics against gram-negative bacteria, including many hospital superbugs, are notoriously difficult to develop and the problem is exacerbated as many of these bacteria are increasingly resistant to currently used antibiotics.
"The authors have unravelled the structure, architecture and mechanism of transport of a critical surface structure in gram-negative bacteria named the lipopolysaccharide. The studies open new avenues to design a novel class of antibiotics to disarm and kill pathogenic bacteria."

Fish-eating spiders 'widespread'

Scientists have discovered that a number of spider species catch and eat fish.
Spiders are traditionally viewed as predators of insects, but a new study suggests that eating fish is widespread among species that live near water.
In some cases, the arachnids used powerful poisons to kill fish that were much bigger than them.
Details of the study by a Swiss-Australian team appear in the academic journal Plos One.
Martin Nyffeler from the University of Basel in Switzerland and Bradley Pusey from the University of Western Australia gathered and documented numerous incidents of spiders catching fish.
Their review of the evidence shows that spiders from as many as five families have been observed eating small fish in the wild and three more families contain species that catch fish under laboratory conditions.
These semi-aquatic spiders typically dwell at the fringes of shallow freshwater streams, ponds or swamps.
Some are capable of swimming, diving and walking on the water surface. But they generally have powerful neurotoxins and enzymes enabling them to kill and digest fish that are bigger and heavier than them.

Fish caught by the spiders were, on average, about twice as long as their arachnid predators.
"Our evidence suggests that fish might be an occasional prey item of substantial nutritional importance," said Dr Nyffeler.
Fish eating by spiders has been reported from all continents with the exception of Antarctica. Most incidents have been documented in North America, especially in the wetlands of Florida.
Here, semi-aquatic spiders have often been witnessed catching and eating small freshwater fish such as mosquitofish.
In order to catch its prey, the spider will typically anchor its hind legs to a stone or a plant, with its front legs resting on the surface of the water, ready to ambush.
The fish is then dragged to a dry place before the feeding process can begin. This usually lasts several hours.

Bird flu 'danger zones' mapped

The "danger zones" in Asia which are vulnerable to a deadly bird flu have been mapped by scientists.
The virus, called H7N9, has infected 433 people mostly in China and has killed 62.
The study, published in Nature Communications, showed parts of Bangladesh, India and Vietnam could easily sustain the virus.
The research group said those areas should monitor poultry to ensure any threat is detected.
The H7N9 virus spread from birds to people and was first detected in March 2013 in China.
New viruses are always a concern because of their unknown potential to spread round the world as a deadly pandemic.
Data from the H7N9 outbreak was used to build a computer model of other at-risk areas in Asia.
It involved mapping 8,000 live-poultry markets and assessing how close together they needed to be to spread the infection.

The map does not show where the virus will end up next, just those areas where conditions are suitable to sustain the virus if it managed to get there.
Bangladesh, northern India, the Mekong and Red River deltas in Vietnam and isolated parts of Indonesia and Philippines were identified as at-risk areas.
Thailand was not a risk zone due to cultural differences, which mean live-poultry markets are not common. It is also noticeable that the whole of China is not equally at risk.
H7N9 is not deadly in birds so there is no "body count" to help track the spread of the disease.
Dr Tim Robinson, a senior spatial analyst at the International Livestock Research Institute in Nairobi, told the BBC: "It is a risk map showing, if the virus arrived to an area, how likely it would be to spread and continue from there.
"H7N9 can spread very quietly throughout the poultry population.
"The main use of the maps is to target surveillance, I think these maps can show areas where there's a high chance of the disease flaring up if it arrives."

What is missing from the maps is how the virus is likely to spread.
The researchers want to factor in data on how poultry are traded in Asia.
Dr Simon Hay, from the University of Oxford, said: "H7N9 is confined to China at the moment and all the neighbouring countries are worried about when their chicken industry might be infected."
"The maps are a prediction if you dropped a new infection in that location would it stick and hold as a disease."
He said the tools developed could be quickly applied to other bird flus making the the jump to people in the future.
Yet the great fear in novel avian influenza is that the virus starts to spread rapidly between people.
"I think the maps become redundant at that point," Dr Hay added.
"It's a very different disease process then, if it does jump to human-to-human transmission then you would use a classical influenza model using the proximity of people, volume of air flights and the amount of people moving between cities."

African firm is selling pepper-spray bullet firing drones

The maker of a drone that fires pepper spray bullets says it has received its first order for the machine.
South Africa-based Desert Wolf told the BBC it had secured the sale of 25 units to a mining company after showing off the tech at a trade show.
It is marketing the device as a "riot control copter" that can tackle crowds "without endangering the lives of security staff".
But the International Trade Union Confederation is horrified by the idea.
"This is a deeply disturbing and repugnant development and we are convinced that any reasonable government will move quickly to stop the deployment of advanced battlefield technology on workers or indeed the public involved in legitimate protests and demonstrations," said spokesman Tim Noonan.
He added that the ITUC would now try to identify which company had ordered the drones.

"We will be taking this up as a matter of urgency with the unions in the mining sector globally," he added.
'Blinding lasers'
Desert Wolf's website states that its Skunk octacopter drone is fitted with four high-capacity paintball barrels, each capable of firing up to 20 bullets per second.
In addition to pepper-spray ammunition, the firm says it can also be armed with dye-marker balls and solid plastic balls.
The machine can carry up to 4,000 bullets at a time as well as "blinding lasers" and on-board speakers that can communicate warnings to a crowd.
Although the firm's site only features a graphic showing the machine's design, the Defence Web news site has published a photo of the drone after it was unveiled at a security trade show near Johannesburg in May.
"We received an order for 25 units just after," Desert Wolf's managing director Hennie Kieser told the BBC.
"We cannot disclose the customer, but I am allowed to say it will be used by an international mining house.
"We are also busy with a number of other customers who want to finalise their orders.
"Some [are] mines in South Africa, some security companies in South Africa and outside South Africa, some police units outside South Africa and a number of other industrial customers."
'Non-lethal' solution
Mr Kieser said that he now planned to invite potential clients to see demonstration flights that would be held in Africa, Europe and the Americas over the coming months.


"We designed and developed the Skunk because of a huge safety risk that had to be addressed," he added.
"We cannot afford another Lonmin Marikana and by removing the police on foot, using non-lethal technology, I believe that everyone will be much safer."
Lonmin Marikana is a reference to a violent strike over pay in 2012 that resulted in 44 deaths at a South African platinum mine. Most of the deceased were workers, but local police were also among the casualties.
Mr Kieser noted that Lonmin was not the customer in question.
Torture tech?
Guy Martin, the editor of Defence Web, said he believed the drone was unique.
"The Skunk unmanned aerial vehicle with its four paintball guns, loudhailer and cameras is only a logical next step in the development of UAVs, but nevertheless it is a watershed moment in their evolution and goes to show that UAVs have almost unlimited uses," he said.
"I predict that we will see a whole new wave of UAVs emerging with payloads more unusual than tasers, dart guns and paintball guns."
But Noel Sharkey, chair of the International Committee for Robot Arms Control campaign group, is concerned that the deployment of such drones risks "creeping authoritarianism and the suppression of protest".
"Firing plastic balls or bullets from the air will maim and kill," he said.
"Using pepper spray against a crowd of protesters is a form of torture and should not be allowed.
"We urgently need an investigation by the international community before these drones are used."

Bezos: Fire phone offers 'something different'

 

There are two ways to view the smartphone Amazon introduced to the world on Wednesday: It's either the latest in a long line of phones with fancy new features that some people will never use or a magic wand for shopaholics.
The phone's most significant feature, called "Firefly," employs audio and object recognition technology to identify products and present the user with ways to purchase the items through Amazon. Users can simply snap a photo of a book, for instance, and Firefly will offer up its title and author, give more information about it and provide ways to buy it through Amazon with a single click.
Seven years after Apple's iPhone took over the category, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos believes there is room in the market for something different. Even with the dominant leads that Apple and Samsung hold, Bezos told The Associated Press in an interview, "it's still early" in the wireless device business.
People change phones all the time, he said. It's not about taking market share right away, but making a phone that is ideal for a certain customer and hoping it takes hold.
"We wanted to make a device that's great for one person," Bezos said. "It's like a certain person likes chocolate and another person likes vanilla. The customer can choose."
While the new Fire Phone comes with some features that are practically industry standard — like a slim profile, a sturdy glass touchscreen, minimalist buttons and one camera for facing toward and away from the user— it breaks new ground in other areas.
The phone's Firefly object recognition feature can identify items and product names captured with the device's camera. It can also pull in useful information such as phone numbers, website addresses. The company has catalogued more than a hundred million items that Firefly can recognize and has tweaked the technology to recognize words and characters in a variety of real-life situations.
Another feature, called "dynamic perspective," uses four infrared, front-facing cameras that tell the phone where the user's face and eyes are located. The feature adjusts the user interface so that tilting the screen relative to the viewer's face can toggle through screens, scroll through websites, make online video game characters fly up or down, and render buildings and other custom-made art in 3-D.
The entry-level Fire phone costs $199 with a two-year AT&T contract, which places it at the high end of smartphone pricing. But the phone comes with 32 gigabytes of memory, double the standard 16 GB. It also comes with 12 months of Amazon Prime, the company's free shipping, video, music and book subscription plan, which normally costs $99 a year.
"This is a very aggressive price point for a premium phone," Bezos said.
The new device fits with Amazon's broader aim to create a more efficient shopping experience while steering more consumers to its retail products.
"It goes back to the mission of Amazon, which is to sell you stuff," said Ramon Llamas of the research firm IDC. "It reduces the number of steps it takes to buy things on the phone."
Fire also comes with a 4.7-inch screen, suitable for using with one hand, and earbuds with flat cords and magnets that are designed to eliminate tangles.
Persuading consumers to buy the Fire over an iPhone or Samsung phone will be tough, analysts say, particularly because Amazon isn't offering price breaks the way it has with Kindle tablets. And sophisticated technology such as 3-D will appeal primarily to early adopters of technology.
"The technology's cool, but consumers don't buy technology," said Julie Ask, an analyst at Forrester Research. "We buy solutions. We buy services. We pay for things that make our lives easier."
Charles Golvin, founder of Abelian Research, believes the phone will appeal mostly to people who already use Amazon services heavily.
"Any loyalist of iPhones or Google is going to have to judge whether there's enough value in what Amazon is offering with Fire to make the transition," he said.
Samsung and Apple dominate worldwide smartphone sales with a combined 46 percent share, according to IDC. And in the U.S., Apple leads with more than 37 percent, with Samsung at nearly 29 percent.
Amazon could succeed even if it doesn't steal market share from the top phone makers. Michael Scanlon, managing director with John Hancock Asset Management, said success will be measured by whether Amazon can increase loyalty among its Amazon Prime members and get them to boost purchases.
Amazon is giving Fire owners a free year of membership, which normally costs $99, and existing subscribers an extra 12 months of membership. Prime offers free two-day shipping, encouraging impulse purchases. It also offers free access to some movies, TV shows, music and books and could encourage consumers to buy additional content, once they are used to the offerings.
Meanwhile, Firefly could encourage more purchases. The feature lets you snap bar codes, phone numbers and more. It can even direct you to facts and data, such as a Wikipedia entry with information about a painting you snapped. It listens to songs, TV shows and movies and can pull up extra info like lyrics, actor bios and other information through its IMDb database.
The phone will be available July 25 in the U.S. exclusively through AT&T. People were able to start ordering it Wednesday.

NHS is the world's best healthcare system, report says

Study by Washington-based foundation says healthcare provision in the US is the worst in the world.
The NHS has been declared the world's best healthcare system by an international panel of experts who rated its care superior to countries which spend far more on health.
The same study also castigated healthcare provision in the US as the worst globally. Despite putting the most money into health, America denies care to many patients in need because they do not have health insurance and is also the poorest at saving the lives of people who fall ill, it found.
The report has been produced by the Commonwealth Fund, a Washington-based foundation which is respected around the world for its analysis of the performance of different countries' health systems. It examined an array of evidence about performance in 11 countries, including detailed data from patients, doctors and the World Health Organisation.
"The United Kingdom ranks first overall, scoring highest on quality, access and efficiency," the fund's researchers conclude in their 30-page report. Their findings amount to a huge endorsement of the health service, especially as it spends the second-lowest amount on healthcare among the 11 – just £2,008 per head, less than half the £5,017 in the US. Only New Zealand, with £1,876, spent less.
In the Commonwealth Fund study the UK came first out of the 11 countries in eight of the 11 measures of care the authors looked at. It got top place on measures including providing effective care, safe care, co-ordinated care and patient-centred care. The fund also rated the NHS as the best for giving access to care and for efficient use of resources.
The only serious black mark against the NHS was its poor record on keeping people alive. On a composite "healthy lives" score, which includes deaths among infants and patients who would have survived had they received timely and effective healthcare, the UK came 10th. The authors say that the healthcare system cannot be solely blamed for this issue, which is strongly influenced by social and economic factors. Although the NHS came third overall for the timeliness of care, its "short waiting times" were praised. "There is a frequent misperception that trade-offs between universal coverage and timely access to specialised services are inevitable. However, the Netherlands, UK and Germany provide universal coverage with low out-of-pocket costs while maintaining quick access to speciality services,", the report added.
The NHS also outperforms the other countries – which include France, Germany and Canada – in managing the care of people who are chronically ill, the report said.
Dr Mark Porter, leader of the doctors' union, the British Medical Association, said the fund's findings were "clear evidence that our much-maligned NHS is one of the top-performing healthcare systems in the world."
However, he warned that the service's achievements were now at risk. "We should not be complacent as we are facing pressures that are threatening the high-quality care that the Commonwealth Fund has rightly praised. A combination of rising patient demand, staff shortages and falling funding is undermining the very foundations of the NHS, as is the constant short-term interference from politicians of all colours."
Dr Peter Carter, chief executive of the Royal College of Nursing, said: "I'm absolutely thrilled to see this because it reinforces that this is a very good NHS, despite the fact that it has such a low level of funding relative to other countries."
The health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, who has been criticised by some senior doctors for painting an unfairly negative picture of NHS staff and the quality of care provided, welcomed the report. "NHS staff work incredibly hard to care for patients and these encouraging results pay testament to that," he said.

Doctors advised against aspirin for patients with irregular heart rhythm

Experts at Nice say using anticoagulants, not antiplatelets like aspirin, could avert 7,000 strokes and 2,000 deaths a year
Aspirin should no longer be used to try to prevent strokes in people with a common heart rhythm disorder as it is ineffective and has acted as a "smokescreen", preventing people from getting the right treatment, government experts say.
The advice, published on Wednesday, affects 100,000 people with atrial fibrillation, which causes the heart to beat irregularly and sometimes too fast, and who are taking aspirin. They have been advised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) to see their GP to discuss alternative medication.
The experts say the majority of people with atrial fibrillation, which is believed to affect more than a million people in Britain – about a quarter of them undiagnosed – and is a condition that increases the risk of stroke fivefold, should be given anticoagulants. This overrides previous advice, issued in 2006, which approved antiplatelets such as aspirin.
Campbell Cowan, chair of the group that drew up the health guidance, said: "Aspirin has been a little bit of a smokescreen to anticoagulation. We now know that aspirin is not safer and it is questionable whether it has any effect at all, so aspirin is no longer recommended for stroke prevention."
Nice said that strokes among people with atrial fibrillation were "highly preventable" and 7,000 a year could be averted if treated with anticoagulants, as well as 2,000 premature deaths.
The now superseded 2006 guideline on atrial fibrillation was the only one in which Nice recommended use of aspirin in primary prevention. It still recommends the drug for management of patients with a combination of heart failure and coronary heart disease and those who have suffered a transient ischaemic attack, or mini-stroke.
Only half of those who should be on anticoagulants are getting them at present, according to the experts. "Any stroke occurring in a patient with atrial fibrillation is a tragedy because it was preventable," said Cowan.
Because of the risk of bleeding, the guidance group does not recommend anticoagulants for people at low risk of stroke or with a high risk of bleeding, both of which can be calculated using new tools published by Nice. Cowan said that only about 6% of people with atrial fibrillation would not get anticoagulants under the new guidelines. The risk of bleeding is believed to be one reason why many GPs have favoured aspirin, which has been given to people with atrial fibrillation for 20 years, but the guidance group found that aspirin carried an increased chance of bleeding.
Despite the findings, Cowan warned patients against any knee-jerk reaction as they might have been given aspirin for another reason, such as coronary heart disease. "They need to continue on aspirin," he said. "They can't assume they are taking aspirin for their atrial fibrillation so they should consult with the doctor."
The low uptake of anticoagulants in the past has also been attributed to the fact that the most common variety, warfarin, requires regular monitoring and dose adjustments to ensure it works properly, making it unsuitable for elderly patients who have mobility problems or are housebound.
The Nice experts recommend increased uptake of a new generation of oral anticoagulants, which are more expensive than warfarin but require less regular monitoring and dose adjustments.
The experts say that the drugs should be made available not just to those at risk not currently on anticoagulants but to those on warfarin who have poor monitoring, estimated to be a third of the total taking the drug.
Stephen Whitehead, chief executive of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, welcomed Nice's guidance but said Britain was lagging behind Europe when it came to uptake of new oral anticoagulants. He called on clinicians to "ensure that they do not prevent patients, who would benefit from these medicines, having access to them".

Mountain top in Chile to be blasted off for Extremely Large Telescope

Most ambitious project yet for European Southern Observatory will be large enough to search for life on other planets.
Shortly after lunch on Thursday afternoon the silence of the Atacama desert in Chile will be rudely broken by the dull crack of dynamite sending a rush of mountain rock skywards.
The explosion, planned for 2pm local time (7pm BST), marks the start of a months-long project to lop the top off the 3,000m-high Cerro Armazones. Once the dust has settled and the rubble has been cleared, the mountain will be smaller, flatter, and ready to host the largest optical and infra-red telescope in the world.
The European Extremely Large Telescope, or E-ELT, will serve astronomers and cosmologists for generations to come. Size, as the name implies, matters. Some 2,500 tonnes of steel rigging are on order to hold a primary mirror nearly 40m wide. That is large enough to see the faintest light from the earliest stars, and pick up signs of life on planets far beyond our solar system.
"Today we cannot even imagine what will be discovered with this facility," programme manager Roberto Tamai told the Guardian from his office in the Chilean desert. "I feel excited. We are opening a highway for the future knowledge of astronomy."
The telescope is the latest and most ambitious project for the European Southern Observatory (ESO), a multinational organisation of which Britain is a leading member. The UK has invested £88m in the E-ELT and will have a significant role in the construction and operation of the telescope, and the advanced instruments it will carry.
But first the jagged peak of Cerro Armazones must be tamed. The mountaintop needs to be broken apart and bulldozed to a plateau large and strong enough to hold the enormous observatory. Perched on top of the reshaped mountain, the €1.1bn (£879m) E-ELT will have near-perfect conditions for observing the heavens.
Cerro Armazones is not the first mountain to be decapitated in the area. Twenty kilometres away across the B710, which cuts a lonely route through the desert, is Cerro Paranal. Engineers from the ESO cut that peak down to size some years back to build another facility, the Very Large Telescope (VLT). They will use the same procedure this time: blast and clear, blast and clear.
In the coming months, mMore than half a million tonnes of rock will be removed from Cerro Armazones, leaving it 18 metres shorter. Scientists and engineers will watch the first blast on Cerro Armazones from the safety of Paranal. The event will be filmed and streamed live on the web from 6pm to 8pm BST, though images from cameras closer to the action may take a day or two to release.
Work in the desert can be a hard slog. The humidity is down to about 10%, making the air extraordinarily dry. The hotel at Paranal has a swimming pool in the lobby and for very good reason.
"You can swim in it if you like, but the point is to keep the humidity at a bearable level. If you sleep for eight hours in 10% humidity, you are almost dead by the time you wake up because you breathe out so much moisture," said Joe Liske, an astronomer at the E-ELT science office.
The low humidity is not the only problem for the 100 or so ESO staff at Paranal. Dust gets everywhere, in your shoes, your glasses, your car. The desert hues, shades of pinky, orangey brown, are monotonous. People come to crave a view of the sea, and the green of plants, entirely absent from the desert. Then there are those missing loved ones back home. "There's a lot of sacrifice. Your private life goes ga-ga," said Tamai.
The E-ELT will take a decade to build. The telescope's huge mirror is too large to make from one piece of glass, so engineers will combine 798 smaller hexagonal mirrors, each of which can be moved independently. The E-ELT has a system called adaptive optics that can shift the mirrors in real time to counteract the blurring effects of the atmosphere. "We need to be able to adjust each one to get the perfect shape for the primary mirror, and that has to happen at all times to get the best possible image quality," Liske said.
When the telescope is operational, around 2024, astronomers will point it at Earth-like planets orbiting sun-like stars in far away solar systems. So far, scientists have made only the most rudimentary measurements of these planets, but E-ELT could change all that. "We want to study the atmospheres of planets that are just the right distance from their stars that life might form on their surfaces. The goal is to try to say whether life might exist on some of these planets," said Liske.
A planet's atmosphere can hold numerous signs of life. The E-ELT will look for infrared signatures of methane, released by much of life on Earth, and other gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide. The telescope could detect direct signs of life, such as chlorophyll found in vegetation. The telescope will have many more uses though, many are not yet apparent. In 2011, scientists shared a Nobel prize for work on supernovae, or exploded stars, that revealed how fast the universe is expanding. Isobel Hook, an astrophysicist at Oxford University who works on E-ELT, hopes to use the telescope to observe more distant supernovae.
"We'll be able to see supernovae much further away, and so map out the expansion of the universe to much earlier times," she said. "The E-ELT is really the next big step for astronomy everywhere."

Indian officials order Coca-Cola plant to close for using too much water

Coca-Cola has appealed the closure order to India's environment court 

 Mehdiganj plant at centre of protests accused of extracting too much groundwater and releasing pollutants above limits.
Authorities in northern India have ordered the closure of a Coca-Cola bottling plant at the centre of protests that it is extracting too much groundwater, an official said Wednesday.
An anti-pollution official said the Mehdiganj plant in Varanasi in the state of Uttar Pradesh had breached the conditions of its operating licence, prompting the order closure earler this month.
"The plant is closed following our orders," Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board member secretary J.S. Yadav told AFP.
"They have also been asked to take suitable measures to recharge the depleting groundwater level by twice the amount they have extracted.
"Also, the effluents released by the plant contain pollutants beyond the permissible limits."
The plant was also asked to produce a permission certificate from a government agency that regulates ground water use, Yadav said.
The company has appealed the closure order to India's environment court, the National Green Tribunal, he said.
Coca-Cola, the world's largest soft-drinks maker which has consistently denied the allegations, could not immediately be contacted for comment.
The Indian unit of the company hit a hurdle earlier this year when local authorities said they would demolish the plant, claiming it was built on village council land and was "illegal".
The authorities also imposed a 126,000 rupee ($2,000) fine on Hindustan Coca-Cola Company Private Limited, over the land issue.
India is one of Coke's fastest-growing markets thanks to an expanding middle class.
The bottling plant, one of 58 that Atlanta-based Coca-Cola has in India, has been at the centre of protests for years. Demonstrators accuse the company of creating major water shortages through excessive extraction of water and of polluting groundwater and soil.
Coke last year announced the completion of work to expand the Varanasi bottling facility which can produce 600 polyethylene terephthalate bottles a minute.

All gone: How erasing billions of birds shocked us

 

It was the moment that humanity learned we had the awesome power to erase an entire species off the face of the Earth in the scientific equivalent of a blink of an eye: The passenger pigeon went from billions of birds to extinct before our very eyes.
It was one bird's death after many. But a century ago, Martha, a red-eyed, grey and brown bird famous as the last surviving passenger pigeon, keeled over, marking an extinction that shook science and the public.
Now, a century later, Martha's back, in a way. She is being taken out of the file cabinets of history in a new Smithsonian Institution exhibit this month, reminding the public of her death, and of other species that have gone extinct because of man. A new scientific study this week shows how pigeon populations fluctuated wildly, but how people ultimately killed off the species.
And some geneticists are even working on the longshot hope of reviving the passenger pigeon from leftover DNA in stuffed birds.
"Here was a bird like the robin that everybody knew and within a generation or two it was gone — and we were its cause, " Duke University ecologist Stuart Pimm said.
In the 18th and 19th centuries the passenger pigeon was the most abundant bird species on Earth. In 1866 in Ontario, just one flock of billions of birds, 300 miles long and one mile wide, darkened the skies for 14 hours as they flew by overhead. Unlike the domesticated carrier pigeon used for messages, these were wild birds.
They were easy to catch because they stayed together. They were considered a poor man's food; domestic workers complained about eating too much passenger pigeon.
"Nobody ever dreamed that a bird that common could be brought into extinction that quickly," said University of Minnesota evolutionary biologist Bob Zink.
Examination of the passenger pigeon's genetic code shows that their population ping-ponged regularly from as much as 5 billion to as few as tens of millions, said a study co-authored by Zink in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences released Monday. Still, the chief causes of the extinction — cutting down Eastern U.S. forests and hunting — were man-made, Zink said.
"Passenger pigeons always reached lows like this, it's just this time their luck ran out because we were around," Zink said.
By 1900, there we no passenger pigeons left in the wild. By 1914, there was just 29-year-old Martha at the Cincinnati Zoo. People lined up to see her. She was a star.
Then on Sept. 1, 1914, Martha was found lying on the bottom of her cage. The passenger pigeon was now extinct. It had gone from billions of birds to zero in about one century, probably less.
It was the first public extinction, something people used to think happened only to relics of the past like dinosaurs, or critters stuck on islands like dodos, Pimm and other scientists said.
"This was a real wake-up call for the public and frankly for scientists too," said Helen James, curator of birds at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. "Ornithologists studied birds and they didn't really think of species becoming extinct."
But they did. And Martha, the last of her kind, was put in a 300-pound block of ice and shipped to Washington D.C. and the Smithsonian. She was stuffed and mounted, continuing as a star. When she traveled back to Cincinnati or to San Diego for a big conservation conference, she flew in a first class seat.
But her star faded. For the last 15 years, she has been in a drab metal filing cabinet in the bowels of the Smithsonian, stuck on the same stick with an older stuffed unrelated pigeon named George. On Monday, they were separated, George was put back in storage and a prettied up Martha was ready for a comeback. An exhibit on her extinction and the 100th anniversary starts June 24 at the Smithsonian.
And if scientists can figure it out, there may be a bigger comeback in the offing. The passenger pigeon is the prime candidate for something new: de-extinction.
Some top geneticists in a non-profit are looking to see if they can create new living versions of the passenger pigeon, by editing the DNA of the closely related band-tailed pigeons, growing those birds from embryo and breeding them. It would cost millions and take at least a decade, said Ben Novak, lead researcher of the group, Revive & Restore of San Francisco.
Pimm and Zink don't like the idea ethically or practically.
Novak sees a world on the verge of a mass extinction of many species and feels something has to be done about it. Reviving some long-lost species may offer "a type of justice for what we're doing now" and also teach people "it's so much easier to keep something alive than to bring it back to life."

Climate change threatens tourism as ski slopes thaw, seas rise

 

Climate change is a growing threat to tourism, from thawing ski resorts to coral reefs hit by warmer seas, and the industry itself should do more to curb its soaring greenhouse gas emissions, a study showed on Tuesday.
Tourism's greenhouse gas emissions, on current rising trends buoyed by ever more travel, are set to reach about 10 percent of the world total by 2025 from between 3.9 and 6 percent now, it said.
"The tourism industry will be severely impacted by climate change," according to the study by Cambridge University's Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) and its Judge Business School and the European Climate Foundation.
Coral reefs, for instance, contributed $11.5 billion a year to tourism earnings and are under threat from warmer sea temperatures, rising sea levels and an acidification caused by a build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, it said.
And warmer winters are shortening winter sports seasons and threatening the viability of some ski resorts, according to the report which distils findings about tourism from studies this year by the U.N. panel of climate scientists.
Ski resorts can try to adapt by attracting summer hikers, for instance, or buy more snow making machines. "But it is hard to tell a positive story around ski resorts," Eliot Whittington, climate change director at CISL, told Reuters.
ALASKA WINS
A few areas of the world might benefit from a shift in tourism, such as Alaska or northern Europe. And elsewhere, seasons may shift.
The report said the Costa Brava region of Spain's Mediterranean coast, for instance, was trying to draw tourists outside the summer months, responding to a lack of water and high temperatures during the high season.
The study also said there was some evidence of people traveling to new destinations at risk of vanishing in a warming world, such as glaciers, the Arctic, Antarctica or coral atolls.
"However, the opportunities presented by such ‘last-chance' tourism will, by definition, be short-lived," the report said.
It also said that an increase of 1 meter (3 feet) in sea level rise this century - the upper bound of scenarios by the U.N. panel - would damage up to 60 percent of resort properties in the Caribbean and swamp many airports and ports.
"Every part of the industry needs to ... think about what more can be done to adapt to climate change, as well as how to continue the process of reducing the impact of their operations on the environment," Stephen Farrant, director of the International Tourism Partnership, said in a statement attached to the report.
Travel accounts for about 75 percent of tourism's greenhouse gas emissions. More efficient planes, vehicles and greener fuels could help curb emissions, it said.

Scientists warn of tourism threat to Antarctica

 

Antarctic scientists warned Wednesday that a surge in tourists visiting the frozen continent was threatening its fragile environment and called for better protection.
Tourist numbers have exploded from less than 5,000 in 1990 to about 40,000 a year, according to industry figures, and most people go to the fragmented ice-free areas that make up less than one percent of Antarctica.
A growing number of research facilities are also being built, along with associated roads, fuel depots and runways, in the tiny ice-free zones.
It is these areas which contain most of the continent's wildlife and plants, yet they are among the planet's least-protected, said a study led by the Australian government-funded National Environmental Research Programme (NERP) and the Australian Antarctic Division.
"Many people think that Antarctica is well protected from threats to its biodiversity because it's isolated and no one lives there," said Justine Shaw from the NERP in the study published in the journal PLoS Biology.
"However, we show that there are threats to Antarctic biodiversity.
"Most of Antarctica is covered in ice, with less than one percent permanently ice-free," she added.
"Only 1.5 percent of this ice-free area belongs to Antarctic Specially Protected Areas under the Antarctic Treaty System, yet ice-free land is where the majority of biodiversity occurs."
Five of the distinct ice-free eco-regions have no protection at all while all 55 of the continent's protected areas are close to sites of human activity.
Steven Chown, from Monash University's School of Biological Sciences, another collaborator in the study, said the ice-free areas contain very simple ecosystems due to Antarctica's low species diversity.
This makes its native wildlife and plants extremely vulnerable to invasion by outside species, which can be introduced by human activity.
"Antarctica has been invaded by plants and animals, mostly grasses and insects, from other continents," he said.
"The very real current and future threats from invasions are typically located close to protected areas.
"Such threats to protected areas from invasive species have been demonstrated elsewhere in the world, and we find that Antarctica is, unfortunately, no exception."
The study said the current level of protection was "inadequate by any measure" with Shaw saying more was needed to guard against the threat posed by the booming tourism industry.
"(We need) to protect a diverse suite of native insects, plants and seabirds, many of which occur nowhere else in the world," she said.
"We also need to ensure that Antarctic protected areas are not going to be impacted by human activities, such as pollution, trampling or invasive species."
Antarctica is considered one of the last frontiers for adventurous travellers.
Most travel by sea, some paying in excess of US$20,000 for a luxury cabin in the peak period from November to March. There is also a healthy market for sightseeing flights.

YouTube to block indie labels who don't sign up to new music service

YouTube's Robert Kyncl on licensing: 'While we wish that we had 100 per cent success rate, we understand that is not likely an achievable goal'. 

Starting internal tests of subscription service but faces accusation of 'catastrophic error of judgement'

Independent artists could disappear from YouTube "in a matter of days" after the Google video service confirmed it was dropping content from independent labels that have not signed up for its upcoming subscription music service.
YouTube is about to begin testing the new service – which will charge people to watch and listen to music without ads, and download songs to their mobile devices – within the next few days, initially within Google.
The company's head of content and business operations, Robert Kyncl, told the Financial Times that the service – previously rumoured to be called YouTube Music Pass – will launch more widely later in the year.
His confirmation that YouTube will block videos from labels that do not sign licensing deals for the new premium tier will be hugely controversial among indie labels, with trade body WIN already filing a complaint to the European Commission about its negotiating strategy.
"While we wish that we had 100% success rate, we understand that is not likely an achievable goal and therefore it is our responsibility to our users and the industry to launch the enhanced music experience," said Kyncl, claiming that YouTube has signed up labels representing 90% of the music industry.
Independent labels are likely to disagree. Their licensing agency Merlin estimates that indies collectively account for a 32.6% market share of the recorded music industry's sales and streams.
Contacted by The Guardian following his comments, WIN's chief executive Alison Wenham was blunt in her response. "They have suffered a simple but catastrophic error of judgement in misreading the market," said Wenham, who had organised a press conference earlier in the month to protest at YouTube's plans.
Wenham said YouTube was "setting itself up for failure" and only a small number of independent labels would agree to its terms.
"We have tried and will continue to try to help YouTube understand just how important independent music is to any streaming service and why it should be valued accordingly. Music fans want a service that offers the complete range of music available. This is something that companies such as Spotify and Deezer do, both of whom have excellent relationships with the independent music sector," she said.
WIN claims that the company has signed lucrative licensing deals with major labels Universal, Warner and Sony, while demanding that independent labels sign up to inferior terms or face having their videos blocked from YouTube's free service.
“Our goal is to continue making YouTube an amazing music experience, both as a global platform for fans and artists to connect, and as a revenue source for the music industry,” a Google spokesman said. He said the subscription-based service would bring new revenue streams “in addition to the hundreds of millions of dollars YouTube already generates for them each year. We are excited that hundreds of major and independent labels are already partnering with us.”
Wenham's criticism echoes a claim made at the event by musician Billy Bragg, who said "I don’t know why they’ve opened this hornet’s nest right now, apart from corporate hubris. I don’t think they realise what a stupid thing they’ve done."
Artists including Adele, Arctic Monkeys and Jack White could see their videos taken down. The site has become a key promotional outlet for independent labels of all sizes in recent years.
YouTube attracts more than 1bn monthly viewers, with music one of its biggest categories. Its upcoming premium music subscription tier will compete with Spotify, Deezer and Napster among other services, including Apple-owned Beats Music and Google's own Google Play Music All Access.
Independent labels have long complained that they deserve more respect from digital music services negotiating licensing deals, and set up Merlin to strike deals on their behalf.
The agency has remained silent throughout the recent arguments about YouTube's planned new service, although its chief executive Charles Caldas criticised the company at an industry conference in late April.
Referring to an earlier quote from Bragg suggesting that musicians unhappy about royalties paid by Spotify should be "marching to YouTube central with flaming pitchforks", Caldas said: "I can’t say Billy’s right, but I can say that he’s not wrong."
The move comes as Amazon too has begun to flex its muscles in ways that limit the content its customers can receive. Amazon is delaying shipments and refused pre-orders for some titles from Hachette, publisher of Harry Potter author JK Rowling, and home to David Baldacci, Stephen Colbert, David Foster Wallace and others.
It has also pulled pre-orders for forthcoming Warner Home Video features, including international blockbuster The Lego Movie, 300: Rise of an Empire, Winter’s Tale and Transcendence.

The whole truth: Children can tell when a teacher commits 'sins of omission'

 

Children learn a great deal about the world from their own exploration, but they also rely on what adults tell them. Studies have shown that children can figure out when someone is lying to them, but cognitive scientists from MIT recently tackled a subtler question: Can children tell when adults are telling them the truth, but not the whole truth?
Led by Laura Schulz, the Class of 1943 Career Development Associate Professor of Cognitive Science, the researchers found that not only can children make this distinction, but they can also compensate for incomplete information by exploring more on their own.
Determining whom to trust is an important skill to learn at an early age because so much of our knowledge about the world comes from other people, says Hyowon Gweon, an MIT postdoc and lead author of a paper describing the findings in the journal Cognition.
"When someone provides us information, we not only learn about what is being taught; we also learn something about that person. If the information is accurate and complete, then you might also trust that person in the future," Gweon says. "But if this person has taught you something wrong, has made a mistake, or has omitted something that's important for you to know, then you might want to suspend your trust, be skeptical of the information he provides in the future, and even seek other sources of information."
The study builds on a 2011 paper in which Schulz, Gweon, and others investigated how children behave when a teacher explains only one function of a toy that can do four different things. They found that these children spent most of their time exploring only the function the teacher had demonstrated (the toy squeaks when a yellow tube is pulled), assuming that was the only thing it could do. However, children who received no instruction spent more time exploring all of the toy's features and ended up discovering more of them.

Trustworthy or not?
In the new study, Gweon wanted to investigate what the children thought of the teacher who did not fully explain what the toy could do.
"Previous studies about children's trust in informants or teachers focused on whether children distinguish, and learn differentially from, someone who says something false from someone who's telling the truth," she says. "Going beyond those sensitivities to truth and falseness, what I wanted to see in this study is whether children are also sensitive to someone who's telling the truth but not the whole truth; someone who didn't tell them everything that they ought to know."
In the first experiment, children aged 6 and 7 were given a toy to explore on their own until they discovered all of its functions. One group of children received a toy that had four buttons, each of which activated a different feature -- a windup mechanism, LED lights, a spinning globe, and music -- while the other group was given a toy that looked nearly identical but had only one button, which controlled the windup mechanism. Then the children watched as a "teacher" puppet demonstrated the toy to a "student" puppet. For both toys, the teacher's instruction was the same: He demonstrated only the windup mechanism.
After the demonstration, the children were asked to rate how helpful the teacher was, using a scale from 1 to 20. Even though the teacher always demonstrated just the windup mechanism, children who knew the toy had three more undemonstrated functions gave much lower ratings than children who knew it was the toy's only function.
The second experiment began the same way, with the children exploring the toy, then seeing either a full or incomplete demonstration of its functions. However, in this study, the teacher then brought out a second toy. Although this toy had four functions, the teacher demonstrated only one.
Children who had previously seen a demonstration they knew to be incomplete explored the toy much more thoroughly than children who had seen a complete demonstration, suggesting that they did not trust the teacher to be fully informative.
"This shows that children are not just sensitive to who's right or wrong," Gweon says. "Children can also evaluate others based on who's providing information that is enough or not enough for accurate inference. They can also adjust how they learn from a teacher in the future, depending on whether the teacher has previously committed a sin of omission or not."
"The study shows yet another set of criteria that children bring to their evaluation of other speakers, beyond things like accuracy, confidence, or knowledgeability," says Melissa Koenig, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota Institute of Childhood Development who was not part of the research team.
Koenig adds that the study raises several interesting follow-up questions, including when the ability to make this type of evaluation develops and whether children can distinguish between different factors that might lead a teacher to provide incomplete information, such as the teacher's lack of knowledge, a willful intention to mislead, or some other circumstance.
Too much information
In another recent study, Gweon and Schulz investigated the flip side of this issue: how children react to teachers who present too much information, rather than too little. In a paper to be presented at the annual conference of the Cognitive Science Society in July, they found that children prefer teachers who do not spend time offering information that the children already know, or that they could have inferred from what they already know.
"These studies are the first steps toward understanding just how rich children's understanding of the world is," Gweon says. "Children are trying to bring together all kinds of information in order to make rational decisions about how to learn about the world, and who to go to for more information, while being also mindful of the cost related to learning, such as time and effort."

Three parents and a baby: Scientists advise caution with regard to artificial insemination method

 

The approval of a new treatment method by which three parents will be able to beget a child is being discussed since a few years in Great Britain and will possibly become a reality in two years. The method is supposed to help in eliminating the mother's genetic defects already in the test tube. The defect lies in so-called mitochondria, the "power houses" of cells. To get rid of defective mitochondria the nucleus of one egg cell has to be transferred to another egg cell bearing intact mitochondria. Scientists at the Vetmeduni Vienna show for the first time that even a few defective mitochondria dragged along in the transfer could cause diseases.
The results were published in Cell Reports.
Mitochondria are cell organelles located within animal and human cells. They produce energy for the organism, possess their own genetic material -- mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) -- and are transmitted exclusively by the mother. Depending on their activity and tasks, different numbers of mitochondria are present in a cell -- usually a few hundred to a thousand per body cell.
Inherited mitochondrial disorders or so-called mitochondropathies occur in about one of 10,000 humans throughout the world. Diseases such as diabetes, stroke, cardiac defects, epilepsy, or muscle weakness may originate from mitochondrial defects. Inherited mitochondrial disorders have been incurable so far. Therefore, efforts are now being made to enable women with this disease to bear healthy children by means of nuclear transfer.
Mitochondria multiply at different rates

Jörg Burgstaller, a scientist and member of Gottfried Brem's research group at the Vetmeduni Vienna, has been working for several years on the genetics of mitochondria. It was known before that different types of mitochondria within a cell can proliferate at different rates. However, it was not known whether this is a singular phenomenon or if these cases occur more frequently.
Burgstaller investigated this in four newly bred mouse models which carried different mixtures of mitochondria whose DNA were related to each other to a differing extent. This meant no health problem for the mice since all mtDNAs are were fully functional.
The outcome was: the more distantly two types of mitochondria within an egg cell were related, the more frequently a growth advantage was noted in favor of one of the two types of mitochondria. When two different mtDNAs were equally common in cells of an organ at the time of birth, one type was completely lost after a while. One mitochondria variant had thus achieved a growth advantage compared to the other variant and superseded the latter. This effect was almost non-existent in genetically very similar mitochondria within the cells; the ratio between the two types of mitochondria was not altered in that case.
The effect is of significance in reproduction medicine
Burgstaller's results may have effects on the planned introduction of the so called "Three-Parent Baby" in Great Britain. Experts take the cell nucleus of one human egg cell whose mitochondria have a defect and place it in an egg cell with "healthy" mitochondria. The baby resulting from this procedure has three parents, namely the mother whose cell nucleus is used, the mother whose mitochondria are involved, and the father whose sperm inseminated the egg cell.
However, this method raises the following problem: in every nuclear transfer, a small number of defective mitochondria are transferred into the healthy egg cell. "So far it was believed that this minimal 'contamination' is of no consequence for the baby. However, our data show that the effect may have dramatic consequences on the health of the offspring. If the mitochondria of both mothers are genetically very different, it may have the same effects seen in the mouse model," says Burgstaller who developed the theory together with co-author Joanna Poulton, Professor of Mitochondrial Genetics at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. "One mitochondrial type may be able to assert itself against the other. If the assertive one happens to carry the defective mtDNA, the benefit of the therapy would be jeopardized."
The solution to the "Three-Parent Baby" problem
Burgstaller and his colleagues suggest the following solution to the problem: the mtDNA of both mothers, i.e. the donor of the nucleus and the donor of the mitochondria, should be analyzed in advance and aligned to each other. So called "matching haplotypes" could prevent the dangerous effect. In the future the effect may even be utilized in a targeted manner to suppress defective mtDNA.
The work was conducted in cooperation with BIAT (Biomodels Austria) and the technology platform Vetcore at Vetmeduni Vienna, Joanna Poulton from John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, Jaroslav Piálek from the Czech Academy of Sciences, and Iain Johnston and Nick Jones from the Imperial College (London).

Investors and gamblers take note: your betting decisions and strategy are determined, in part, by your genes.
University of California, Berkeley, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) researchers have shown that betting decisions in a simple competitive game are influenced by the specific variants of dopamine-regulating genes in a person's brain.
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter -- a chemical released by brain cells to signal other brain cells -- that is a key part of the brain's reward and pleasure-seeking system. Dopamine deficiency leads to Parkinson's disease, while disruption of the dopamine network is linked to numerous psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, including schizophrenia, depression and dementia.
While previous studies have shown the important role of the neurotransmitter dopamine in social interactions, this is the first study tying these interactions to specific genes that govern dopamine functioning.
"This study shows that genes influence complex social behavior, in this case strategic behavior," said study leader Ming Hsu, an assistant professor of marketing in UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business and a member of the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute. "We now have some clues about the neural mechanisms through which our genes affect behavior."

The implications for business are potentially vast but unclear, Hsu said, though one possibility is training workforces to be more strategic. But the findings could significantly affect our understanding of diseases involving dopamine, such as schizophrenia, as well as disorders of social interaction, such as autism.
"When people talk about dopamine dysfunction, schizophrenia is one of the first diseases that come to mind," Hsu said, noting that the disease involves a very complex pattern of social and decision making deficits. "To the degree that we can better understand ubiquitous social interactions in strategic settings, it may help us understand how to characterize and eventually treat the social deficits that are symptoms of diseases like schizophrenia."
Hsu, UIUC graduate student Eric Set and their colleagues, including Richard P. Ebstein and Soo Hong Chew from the National University of Singapore, will publish their findings in the online early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Two brain areas involved in competition
Hsu established two years ago that when people engage in competitive social interactions, such as betting games, they primarily call upon two areas of the brain: the medial prefrontal cortex, which is the executive part of the brain, and the striatum, which deals with motivation and is crucial for learning to acquire rewards. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans showed that people playing these games displayed intense activity in these areas.
"If you think of the brain as a computing machine, these are areas that take inputs, crank them through an algorithm, and translate them into behavioral outputs," Hsu said. "What is really interesting about these areas is that both are innervated by neurons that use dopamine."
Hsu and Set of UIUC's Department of Economics wanted to determine which genes involved in regulating dopamine concentrations in these brain areas were associated with strategic thinking, so they enlisted as subjects a group of 217 undergraduates at the National University of Singapore, all of whom had had their genomes scanned for some 700,000 genetic variants. The researchers focused on only 143 variants within 12 genes involved in regulating dopamine. Some of the 12 are primarily involved in regulating dopamine in the prefrontal cortex, while others primarily regulate dopamine in the striatum.
The competition was a game called patent race, commonly used by social scientists to study social interactions. It involves one person betting, via computer, with an anonymous opponent.
"We know from brain imaging studies that when people compete against one another, they actually engage in two distinct types of learning processes," Set said, referring to Hsu's 2012 study. "One type involves learning purely from the consequences of your own actions, called reinforcement learning. The other is a bit more sophisticated, called belief learning, where people try to make a mental model of the other players, in order to anticipate and respond to their actions."
Trial-and-error learning vs belief learning
Using a mathematical model of brain function during competitive social interactions, Hsu and Set correlated performance in reinforcement learning and belief learning with different variants or mutations of the 12 dopamine-related genes, and discovered a distinct difference.
They found that differences in belief learning -- the degree to which players were able to anticipate and respond to the actions of others, or to imagine what their competitor is thinking and respond strategically -- was associated with variation in three genes which primarily affect dopamine functioning in the medial prefrontal cortex.
In contrast, differences in trial-and-error reinforcement learning -- how quickly they forget past experiences and how quickly they change strategy -- was associated with variation in two genes that primarily affect striatal dopamine.
Hsu said that the findings correlate well with previous brain studies showing that the prefrontal cortex is involved in belief learning, while the striatum is involved in reinforcement learning.
"We were surprised by the degree of overlap, but it hints at the power of studying the neural and genetic levels under a single mathematical framework, which is only beginning in this area," he said.
Hsu is currently collaborating with other scientists to correlate career achievements in older adults with genes and performance on competitive games, to see which brain regions and types of learning are most important for different kinds of success in life.
